Today’s RE.net on the NAR

Jim Duncan posting at AgentGenius:
Engage us, please. What’s an organization to do to maintain relevance to its paying members and the general public? What if the current presidential campaigns ignored Web 2.0 (whatever that means)? The same thing that’s happening to the National Association of Realtors - they’d lose the public’s confidence.
In spirit of my experiences, any time a chance arises to take a swipe at NAR’s antiquated ways and membership, I’ll oblige.
. . .
Maybe one day the NAR will use it’s collective wisdom (and money from it’s million person army) to offer their membership some worthy advice and strategy instead of trying to protect some antiquated legacy.
Both are very interesting reads.
One web savvy commenter on the AgentGenuis posts says, “NAR should start a blog”. That she’s not aware there are several NAR “blogs” speaks volumes. And not about her….
And a reply to that comment says, “NAR has a blog… and to illustrate Jim’s point; it’s interesting that as connected as you are to social media applications and technology that even you didn’t know that. I have to go search it out, and frankly after seeing it - it was a waste of time to do so.”
Kinda sad….

Meanwhile, VAR organizes a free meeting for bloggers, by bloggers. Think you could make it, Jay?
I assure you that Missy was being facetious about NAR starting a blog.
Ben - I’d *love* to. It’s a loooong way to fly for a one day event, but I know you guys will do it right. And it’d be great to meet some of the VA bloggers I haven’t had the pleasure to meet yet….
Lani - ya think? I missed the sarcasm, but then that happens with the written word sometimes.
Appreciate the hat tip Jay…Love the site, been a fan for awhile.
…I hate doing this, I do…. I hate admitting that I’ve been wrong.
I’ve been struggling for awhile with NARWisdom and few others. I have long defended the “Association” (not necessarily NAR) because of the promise that I see - the potential. I also have long thought that by Realtors being “negative” about the Association we were just dividing our own house and damaging ourselves..
However, I’ve been reading ALL the posts here for some time and I’ve added it to my blogroll. Why? Because (I say this with held hung low in shame) I think that you’re right more often than not.
I’ve spent the entire week looking at the issue and reading as much as I can. I think RE.net has more influence than we are seeing now and giving it credit for.
This is my way of “opening my mind” to other opinions and giving them the same opportunities that I hope I can get in return.
My argument that the Association has value comes from my experience with my state (VAR) and local and seeing them adapt and really strive to meet the member. I can only hope that NAR does the same.
It’s simply become more of a business and less of an advocate. It’s left this responsibility to the state and locals and not really been the example that I hope they can be one day…
I still hope that we can all work to the same end and actually influence the Associations to go back to their origins and seek to represent the members needs, as opposed to telling them what the needs are.
