Dalton Gets… Something… from the NAR

Jonathan Dalton has posted a series of three blog posts that outline some communication he’s received directly from both the NAR President and the Senior VP of “Convention and Communication” with regard to the mysterious $30 “assessment” that is popping up on realtor’s dues bills for the “public awareness campaign”.

Edited to add: The NAR is telling Jonathan this assessment fee has been required in the past. It’s the first time I recall seeing it, but I don’t pay a lot of attention. I just write the check — I have no other choice.
Anyone out there have an old statement they can verify whether or not this fee has been added on before?

Just added on Agent Genius that I was told this fee has been there in the past. I don’t remember it but I also don’t hold on to my paperwork to verify.
The assessment has been around — and on your association dues bills — for ten years. Literally. Started out at $10 or $15, if I recall correctly, and has risen over the years, as approved by NAR’s Board of Directors.
Look, NAR is certainly not above criticism, but sometimes you guys g off half-cocked and find conspiracies where there aren’t any. It’s fine to be against the assessment…and anything else NAR or state associations or locals do…but for goodness sake, get your facts straight first. It aids credibility.
Well, it happened… I actually drank the kool-aid and ranted on this very blog about the “special assessments” when I should have known better! I commented here about the $30 issue before checking the facts, because the “new” agents are near and dear and I know that they are struggling. Adding an additional fee would have been crazy and it should have stopped me, realizing that I hadn’t heard about this from anyone else. But it didn’t…. I called around today - the fee has in fact been around forever and it appears that your local association simply broke it down for you. Your beef isn’t with NAR it’s the way in which the local association wasn’t giving you all the info you wanted coupled with the fact that you haven’t been paying attention to previous billings. Shame on me…
So the fact that it has been around for a while makes it OK?????? Don’t really see how that makes a difference.
