Quote of the Day

Does NAR have what it takes to create a nationwide MLS? Sadly, probably not. The real estate industry has been playing catch-up with technology over the last several years, and NAR with it’s 99 years of baggage, has been the slowest to evolve. NAR acknowledges their lumbering pace to embrace technology, but they are still missing the mark stating that their nationwide MLS will only be for Realtors, not the general public.
From Robert Nield at The Phoenix Real Estate Technology Exchange Blog.
The linked video in Robert’s post is from Inman’s Real Estate Connect in San Francisco. It’s 51 minutes long, but well worth a look. It’s a “Connect Duet” between Dale Stinton, NAR CEO and Rich Barton, co-founder of Zillow.com.

I still can’t understand the push for a national MLS - for agents or otherwise, but particularly for agents. I’m only licensed in Arizona. Why would I care what’s for sale in North Dakota?
Oh, don’t worry. Fidelity or some other title company will get around to it. They’re just biding their time getting their arms around the sales biz side of real estate.
Once they figure set up the technology - as they are now - they’ll figure out an angle for snaring a large percentage of the buying public into making their selections on-line, sending out a notary public as the human facilitator for showings, then back to the computer for the on-line negotiations and signing of documents.
Trust me, they are angling to take the real property transaction as close as possible to fully automatic and virtual. In the process a whole crap load of human providers will be knocked out of the business. The on-line chat folks will likely be Indians. That’s the title company outsource heaven.
So, be careful what you wish for and remember who is behind Cyberhomes and most other really cool techno stuff, then take a look at what’s happening to traditional title insurance providers then think about YOUR livelihood.
I don’t see the need for a national MLS either. I just liked the quote!
Diane - I can’t see the majority of people buying a home on-line, sight unseen. It’s on thing to buy a plane ticket for a couple of hundred on line. Buying a home for hundreds of thousands is a whole ‘nuther story. Much of the process though NEEDS to be streamlined and automated.
LOL I’m laughing so hard my sides hurt! Didn’t they try that a decade or two ago? It wasn’t a MLS but put our listings online? It morphed into Realtor.com which is worse than terrible and not gaining any ground.
NAR doing a national MLS is a horse that left the barn, a very long time ago.
